The complete encrypted key is engraved on a single plate. Simple and self-contained — one plate holds everything needed.
The key is split across 2 plates using XOR. Both plates are required to reconstruct the key. Hand one to a trusted person — no single plate reveals the key alone.
The key is split into 3 shares using Shamir's Secret Sharing. Any 2 of the 3 plates are enough to unlock. Lose one? No problem. Distribute them across trusted holders for maximum resilience.

You don't need to buy a metal plate. During setup, your browser generates a printable PDF of your QR code. Printed on good-quality paper and stored in a fireproof safe, this provides excellent protection at zero additional cost.
If you have a voucher code (e.g. from our Kickstarter campaign), you can redeem it in My Vault to receive a free metal plate. The voucher covers the full cost of the corresponding plate tier.
